Cosmetic laser treatments allow for the correction of a number of medical and aesthetic conditions. Newer technologies and advancements in IPL technologies now allow us to treat an even larger number of these conditions. All aesthetic and cosmetic lasers can be classified by reatment type as either being ablative or non-ablative to the skin.
Non-ablative lasers correct medical and aesthetic conditions in the epidermis and lower reticular dermis (skin tightening). These lasers are used for such conditions as hair reduction, photofacial, facial veins, age spots, leg veins, pigmented lesions, acne, and skin tightening. Most non-ablative lasers use intense pulse light (IPL), radio frequency, and infrared devices to achieve these results. In many cases the primary skin condition being treated also allows for clearance of secondary skin conditions due to the light energies of the treatment. Almost all of these procedures allow for increased collagen production and increased vascular to the soft tissues of the skin that allows for greater oxygen to be introduced to the area and greater lymphatic drainage. There is typically no down-time associated with these procedures.
Types of cosmetic lasers
The ablative lasers and treatments for vaious skin conditions are typically used for skin resurfacing, scar revision, and acne scarring. These treatments ablate (burn away) small amounts (pixels) of skin that allow for the body to heal itself from the wound and produce new skin that is smooth and healthy that take away the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and scars while producing a large amount of skin tightening and collagen production. There are (2) types of cosmetic lasers used to produce this effect and are the Fractional CO2 lasers and SubAblative lasers using radio frequency. Fractional CO2 laser can be used to ablate 20% of your skin area in one year using multiple treatments but there may be downtime of up to 3-5 days after the procedure. The latest SubAblative lasers using radio frequency preserves the epidermis (top layers of skin) and can be used to ablate 30% of the skin since it preserves the upper layers. Both types of lasers have been used successfully in creating dramatic results for all skin types and age groups.
Advancements to cosmetic lasers now allow for fewer treatment sessions as well as greater efficacy than the lasers from 2-3 years ago. Multi-platform lasers now allow for even more treatment options that include other types of light energies including radio frequency and infrared. The addition of having choices in the mode of laser treatment to be given as well as new types of delivery systems allow for more affordable, safer, comfortable, and better treatments with less downtime or recovery.
